Academic
Program
Professor
Lee Osterman from Philadelphia was the invited presidential
guest speaker, who provided four instructional course
lectures and attended the registrars hand conference.
There were long panel discussions at the completion
of each session, which enabled him to be involved in
many academic discussions.
To our knowledge this
is the first Australian conference in which disclosure
statements were completed by the presenters. It is the
first time that a key-pad system has been used for the
Australian Hand Surgery Society. This enabled the membership
to be more actively involved in discussions and the
quiz.
Susan Mackinnon, from
St Louis, provided a lecture on "Nerve transfers
for the upper limb" via a teleconference. This
was a very stimulating presentation on the role of nerve
transfers similar to the use of tendon transfers. Presentations
provided by Lee Osterman and Susan Mackinnon were recorded
on a DVD and will be made available to the membership.
Other instructional course
lectures included, Day Surgery Anaesthesia, Biomechanics
of Locking Plate and others provided by the membership.
The best paper was won
by Jagdeep Nanchahal for his presentation titled, "Tendon
Rupture in Rheumatoid Arthritis; Is Membrane Type 1
Matrix Metalloproteinase the Key."
The John Hueston award
for a quality paper on Dupuytren's contracture was won
by Jagdeep Nanchahal on, "Normal Dermal Fibroblast
May be the Key in Preventing Recurrent Dupuytren's contracture."
Social
Program
The social
program highlights included a taste of South Australia,
which was an extravaganza of the depth and breadth of
South Australian Fine Food and Wine. The conference
dinner was held at the National Wine Centre which provides
a culinary delight which was matched with the perfect
wine. The contemporary architecture and the ambience
of a jazz quartet provided the backdrop to our main
dinner.
The usual golf and tennis
tournaments were fought in walm conditions. Stuart Kirkham
and Margie Hicks won the tennis and Malcolm Wicks the
golf.

meeting by thanking Greg Bain and Wayne Taylor for a
well organized meeting and encouraged the membership
to support Michael Tonkin and his team for the 2007
IFSSH Meeting.
